Young innovators using skills and imagination to solve problems as a team

Charger Robotics FIRST LEGO League teams can have up to 10 team members, grades 5-8.  Students enrolled at Silver Spring Intermediate School and Templeton Middle School are eligible.

FIRST LEGO League is an exciting alliance between FIRST and the LEGO® Group.  It’s a robotics program designed to get children excited about science and technology — and teach them valuable employment and life skills.  Students program an autonomous robot (using a LEGO MINDSTORMS® set) to score points on a thematic playing surface, create an innovative solution to a problem as part of their Project, all while guided by the FIRST LEGO League Core Values. These three elements – the Robot Game, Project, and Core Values – make up what we call our "challenge".

Students get to:

  • Develop problem-solving, organizational, and team-building skills

  • Apply real-world math and science concepts

  • Design, build, and program LEGO MINDSTORMS robots to perform missions

  • Select real-world problems to research

  • Invent solutions to selected research problems

  • Present their solutions to industry professionals

FIRST LEGO League combines the engineering challenge of a robotics competition with real-world problem solving and inventing.  Team members learn science and technology skills and valuable employment and life skills at the same time.

The Core Values are the cornerstones of the FIRST LEGO League program.  They are among the fundamental elements that distinguish FIRST LEGO League from other programs of its kind.  By embracing the Core Values, participants learn that friendly competition and mutual gain are not separate goals, and that helping one another is the foundation of teamwork.

Our Teams

Charger Robotics students have the option to join one of four FIRST LEGO League teams.

While all four teams operate out of the same facility and are all under the Charger Robotics umbrella, these teams are each allowed to have their own operating philosophies and methods.  Teams are encouraged to experiment, discover, innovate, and share best practices to benefit the entire organization.

There are 2 to 3 adult mentors ("coaches") per team.  Some mentors prefer to stay with one particular team, while other mentors float between several teams and share their skills with a wider range of students.
